The Pact of Our Youth

Historical fiction • Literary fiction

Synopsis

West Berlin, 1949. Every morning, twins Arno and Elias Adler climb to the roof. Every morning, Elias promises to jump. Every morning, Arno convinces him otherwise.

During the war, as both were conscripted into the Hitlerjugend, they made a pact: they would jump to their death if the world didn’t get better.

Four years later, the world still hasn’t. As the Cold War brews and Germany is divided, the twins—now university students—face the moral price of being on the wrong side of history. Determined to make good on the pact of their youth, the twins prepare for the day they will jump. Until Arno falls for a fellow student, Ada Arendt.

Ada is an ardent and hopeful literature student who takes a liking to the twins. It is by chance that she discovers Elias on the roof, ready to end his life. The conversation they have changes the course of their lives.

But when secrets of Elias and Arno’s time with the Hitlerjugend resurface, Elias’ newfound will to live is tested—so is Ada’s growing attachment to him.

In an increasingly volatile climate, the twins must decide what they owe a broken world.
